Tatev Ropeway and Monastery

Tatev Monastery, Armenia – 2016. The Tatev Ropeway or “Wings of Tatev” is a 5.7 kilometer aerial tramway which goes between the village of Halidzor and the Tatev Monastery. It was opened in 2010 and is supported by three towers as it passes over the village of Halidzor then over the gorge of the River Vorotan. The view of the gorge and the road that goes through it is spectacular. The Tatev Monastery is situated on plateau overlooking the River Vorotan gorge. The plateau has been a religious site since pre-christen times and the first church was built there in the 4th century. Over the centuries it has been built up and destroyed several times. At one point the monastery hosted one of the most important Armenian medieval universities but was mostly destroyed on the late 14th century. It was rebuilt again in the 17th and 18th centuries.

There was very thick fog in the area before we set off on our trip. Fortunately it cleared.
